This project is a collaboration between Bridging the Gap, a local nonprofit, and the On the Books project hosted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

This project has two goals:

  1. Collect oral histories of Orange County community members who have personal experience under Jim Crow to compare their recollections of laws and norms against what is available in the On the Books dataset. Those oral histories will reside on this site, and will also be archived at the Souther Oral History Program at UNC-Chapel Hill.

  2. Develop a controlled vocabulary based on “civil rights” and “race” indexing terms used in the North Carolina Digest, so that legal scholars can search for those laws, either available in the On the Books dataset or in other legal documents.
